In 1996, after the first invasion of Iraq, and the subsequent sanctions, Madeleine Albright was asked: “We have heard that a half million children have died,.. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And — and you know, is the price worth it?” Albright replied, “I think this is a very hard choice, but the price — we think the price is worth it.” (Find out more about the effects of sanctions on Iraq here) Is that the price of oil, Ms. Albright? It seems you espoused, condoned and promoted policies of genocide, starvation and mass murder when it suited your purpose.
And then, I turn on BBC… Every channel has clippings of the massive rallies staged in protest to the world’s apathy towards Darfur, and almost all of them show Ms. Albright making a speech on a stage plastered with anti-genocide posters. She’s making speeches at the Clinton Global Initiative Conference, and receiving honorary degrees worldwide, and writing books about getting religion. I believe she has since apologised for her tactless remark (7 years after making the remark) about the Iraqi children. It is essential that everyone read John Ryan’s excellent article on Ms. Albright entitled “An Honorary Degree in Child Sacrifice?” to learn more about her.
Either the world has forgotten her previous pro-genocide stance, or they just don’t care.
Which is it?
